O. O. Howard Correspondence, 1876-1878.

Three letters written by Howard to John B. Monteith, Indian Agent to the Nez Perce, from Fort Lapwai during the Nez Perce War. He talks about arrangements for "the removal" in May 1877. The final letter, written in February 1878 discusses the behavior of James Lawyer, a Christian Nez Perce, and problems of future boundary disputes. He also talks about the return of the Prisoners of War.

Oliver Howard was born in Leeds, Maine, the son of Rowland Bailey Howard and Eliza Otis Howard. Rowland, a farmer, died when Oliver was 9 years old. Oliver attended Monmouth Academy in Monmouth, North Yarmouth Academy in Yarmouth, Kents Hill School in Readfield, and graduated from Bowdoin College in 1850 at the age of 19. John B. Monteith and Charles E. Monteith, Indian agents for Fort Lapwai, were both sons of the Reverand W. J. Monteith who settled at Lapwai as a missionary. John Monteith was appointed as Indian Agent to the Nez Perce at Fort Lapwai in 1871. Monteith sided with the "treaty" Nez Perce, and supported moving Chief Joseph's band to his reservation leading up to the Nez Perce War.
